Hey you amazing, inspiring, inclusive community of women – this is a great big, year-end shout out to you. THANKS so much for your appreciation, your support, your enthusiasm and your overarching awesomeness all year round.
2011 was a year of innovation and pioneering for Flygirl Productions. We built a new website, explored some new venues, streamlined our systems, and celebrated our tenth birthday.
Throughout the year, we showcased a stellar line-up of local and international talent, including: airbrush artists, live performers, and female DJs. And we continued to pound the dance floors to promote Vancouver as a lesbian tourist destination. As part of that, we teamed up for a second year with Club Skirt’s The Dinah – the largest girl party music festival in the world. Resident Flygirl DJ Riki Rocket was one of the 2011 Dinah DJ’s.
Early in the year, we marked our third February of partnering with Winterpride, a shred-ready gay and lesbian ski week in Whistler. In the summer, we cut through rolls of red tape and hosted the first-ever lesbian event on the Plaza at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The City of Vancouver was delighted with how it all went, so we’ll have their stamp of approval if we want to celebrate there again. And in September, we got a delicious surprise when we found out we’d been voted (happy tingle) Best Lesbian Nightclub Party, Readers’ Choice, in the Best of Georgia Straight – without us even knowing we’d been nominated. Aw shucks, you guys.
You give so much to us, and we work hard to spread the love throughout the LGBTQ community. Mandy took part in BC’s first “It Gets Better” video produced by B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth. This is a topic very dear to our hearts and we do all we can to educate, participate and support queer youth. We also helped facilitate a combined donation and sponsorship totaling $15,500 to Youthco, Friends For Life, GIVE, Vancouver Pride Society, and Out On Screen, as well as offering many in-kind, giveaway donations to various smaller charities.
2011 is almost a wrap. To review fond memories, check out our gallery of 2011 photos. But don’t look back for long. We still have Boxing Day to celebrate at Canvas Lounge and a pile of SUPER FAB, wild and sexy parties to look forward to in 2012!
All the best,
Leigh & Mandy
