Riding The Rainbow Unicorn.
Posted by Mandy Randhawa on August 4, 2016
Vancouver Pride is wrapped for another year. But happily it comes back every 360 or so nights, and each year the community builds and the pride lingers longer.
As for Flygirl’s Pride, there were so many great moments: from the body shots on a moving boat at Chicks Ahoy to riding the rainbow unicorn at Chicas. We saw women holding hands and skipping like kids in their rainbow capes; groups of singing, table dancing friends at Wild Fruit, and everyone hugging the big security guys at Hershe Bar. Our favourite moment of all was at the end of Chicas, when the fire truck came by and a gaggle of girls asked for the truck to turn on its lights, then its siren, then got photos with the firemen and their Pride flags.
Like some of you, we were disappointed that Taryn Manning had to cancel at the last moment when her purse was snatched — after just putting her passport inside it! We had planned for every issue we could think of, from Taryn’s work schedule changing to flight delays, but we hadn’t planned for purse snatching. We pulled out all the stops to get her here, and so did she, but unfortunately governments don’t work that fast, especially not on a weekend. Once we knew it wouldn’t work, we tried to get the word out as quickly as possible and we retweeted Taryn’s post about it, hoping that would quickly spread the news. We know many of you were bummed, as were we, but fortunately for us all, the rest of the DJ team – Riki, Nathalie, Miss M & Kasey made rainbows from the rain and kept the Chicas festivities fabulous.
BIG, heartfelt thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate Pride with us. And piles of gratitude to the sponsors, performers, crew, and event security who worked their magic so we could play.
We look forward to seeing you very soon.
